The surname Ylönen originated in the same way as almost every other surname in Savo. It meant the son of Yllö or Yrjö. We have a very distant ancestor Yllö, whose sons were called Yllö's sons or Ylös. For some reason, this partonym form became a surname.
The Ylönen family descends from Jussi Ylönen, who was born around 1470. His son Jussi owned the Ylölänmäki farm in Kangasniemi. The farm had an area of about 8,000 ha and its area extended to the Kangasniemi, Pieksämäki rural municipality and Hankasalmi.
With a few exceptions, the current Ylönen are descendants of the eldest, Jussi Ylönen (family 1). The eldest Jussi Ylönen's son Jussi (family 2), who is also our common ancestor, lived on his farm in Ylölänmäki. At that time, the Ylölänmäki farm had no less than 8000 hectares in size. In addition to the current Kangasniemi, it included areas in the current Pieksämäki rural municipality and Hankasalmi area.
Ylölänmäki can be found about 15 km from Kangasniemi towards Pieksämäki. The hill is quite high and offers good views of the surrounding terrain. The value of Jussi Ylönen's (family 2) land holdings can be estimated at at least 100 million grandmother's marks (about 17 million euros) and he had no debts at all. Jussi's estate has been divided into hundreds of plots over the centuries, most of which were owned by his descendants for a long time, as they still are today.
